Island Records Celebrates 50 years
In 1959 Chris Blackwell founded the Island label in Kingston, Jamaica. Relocating to London in the early 60s Blackwell built the most diverse and enviable back catalogue of any independent record label in history. Island's early roots lie in Jamaican ska and rock-steady, whilst through the label's expansion they became the cutting edge of progressive rock in the late 60s. The signing of such international superstars as Bob Marley and U2 made the label a household name, and all the while Blackwell brought to Island a unique vision and passion which still informs the label's approach to this day.
To mark this milestone in Island Records history, the label is collaborating with Chris Blackwell (who also founded Blue Mountain Music Publishing) to arrange the Island 50 festival. For a full rundown of events, visit www.island50.com.
With their natural affiliation, Blue Mountain Music looks after the publishing for many highlights in the Island back catalogue. Copyrights include music from the likes of Baaba Maal, John Martyn, Free, Nirvana, Spooky Tooth, Burning Spear, Toots & The Maytals, Black Uhuru, Third World, Marianne Faithful, Grace Jones, U2 and of course Bob Marley.
