Film Info: In 1966, Britain is emerging from the drabness of the post-war 50’s and a political and sexual revolution is underway. On the other side of the world in Sydney Australia, counterculture journalist Richard Neville and artist Martin Sharp decide that they want to be part of Swinging London. Ambitious and determined to be at the heart of the changing times, Richard re-launches OZ – a satirical and subversive magazine from their university days. With girlfriend Louise Ferrier, he assembles a team of journalists, including fellow Australian Germaine Greer. When Martin adds his artistic genius to the mix, the magazine is launched. OZ soon becomes the handbook for the counterculture. When a youthful Felix Dennis joins the team to sell advertising space in the magazine, it is a success and for the next couple of years, the OZ team finds itself at the epicentre of the Sixties movement, surrounded by rock musicians, liberal intellectuals, artists, designers, hustlers and fabulous freaks. The age of free love and flower power comes into full bloom. It doesn’t last. Richard and Louise’s relationship becomes complicated in world of free love, and when teenage school-kids are invited to edit OZ as a stunt, the British Establishment takes particular offence. Richard, Felix and fellow editor Jim Anderton are arrested and sentenced for Obscenity. OZ is thrust into another sort of limelight and Richard finds himself at the centre of a trial that grips the nation. Unwittingly, he finds himself the spokesperson for an entire generation, fighting for the right to freedom of speech and creative thought. Based on Richard Neville’s memoirs of this time in his life HIPPIE HIPPIE SHAKE is ‘the dreams, the trips, the trials, the love-ins, the screw-ups…..THE SIXTIES’
